Ticketing Aggressive Cars and Trucks
The Utah Highway Patrol and UDOT Motor Carrier Division want to reduce the number of commercial motor vehicle and passenger motor vehicle crashes, injuries and fatalities. That’s why Utah is participating in the federal Ticketing Aggressive Cars and Trucks (TACT) enforcement program. Crash reduction can be achieved if we all share the highway with each other and avoid these aggressive driving behaviors:
- Unsafe lane changes
- Tailgating
- Failing to signal lane changes
- Failing to yield right-of-way
- Speeding
- Aggressive driving
(a combination of three or more of the above behaviors)
Truck Smart Tips
- Before pulling in front of a truck, allow one car length for every 10 miles per hour of travel.
- A truck simply does not drive like a car. It can take over 500 ft. for a fully loaded truck going 65 mph to come to a complete stop.
- The truck driver has blind spots—or areas he can’t see—in front of the cab, on both sides of the rig and the rear of the trailer.
- If you find yourself driving behind a truck and can see the truck’s side mirrors on both sides, you are at a safe distance behind it. If you can’t see the mirrors then you are too close.
CMV Safe Driving Reminders
- Slow down, buckle up and stay alert.
- Look at least 15 seconds in front of you to respond early to changing conditions and avoid dangerous, abrupt braking situations.
- Slow down, move over for emergency vehicles.
- Check your mirrors often.
- Always drive defensively.
- Slow down in work zones.
